Reel in Excitement: Unexpected Catches Await on St. Pete's Flats!
I had a great day out on the water with Shankaramurthy for our Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip with SRS Adventures. We met up in St. Petersburg at 1:00 am, which is pretty early, but it's worth it to beat the heat in June. This time of year is perfect for flats fishing, with the warmer waters bringing in plenty of fish to the shallows.
We headed out to some prime flats spots I know, and the conditions were just right. The water was great, making it easy to spot fish. We focused on sight fishing, flipping, and pitching - all great techniques for the flats. It was partly cloudy throughout the day, which can actually be good for fishing as it keeps the water from getting too warm. We kept an eye on the sky though, as there were some possible storms in the forecast.
The highlight of the day was when Shankaramurthy hooked into a nice Red Snapper. It put up a good fight, but we managed to get it in the boat. Measured out at 23 inches - a solid catch for sure. Red Snapper isn't typically what you'd expect on the flats, but that's fishing for you - always full of surprises. We didn't land as many fish as we sometimes do, but that one Red Snapper made the trip worthwhile.
