Red-Hot Flats: Snapper Showdown in St. Pete's Stormy Skies

I had a blast taking Kumar out for a Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip with SRS Adventures in St. Petersburg this June. It's a great time for flats fishing here, with the water warming up and fish getting more active. We met up at 1:00 am in Florida, KY, which gave us plenty of time to get out on the water before sunrise. The weather was partly cloudy, with a chance of strong storms, but that didn't stop us from having an awesome day on the flats.

We focused on sight fishing, flipping, and pitching - perfect techniques for the conditions we had. The water was great, making it easier to spot fish and get our baits right where we needed them. Kumar was a quick learner, picking up the techniques in no time. We were after Red Snapper, and man, did we find them! The highlight of the day was when Kumar hooked into a nice 23-inch Red Snapper. It put up a good fight, but Kumar handled it like a pro and we got it in the boat.

Even with the threat of storms, we managed to stay out there and keep fishing. That's the thing about flats fishing - you've got to be ready for anything. We moved around a bit, trying different spots and adjusting our approach as needed. Kumar seemed to really enjoy the challenge of sight fishing, especially when we'd spot a fish and have to make that perfect cast. It's always cool to see someone get into the rhythm of flats fishing.
