Sight-fishing Success: Varsha Lands a Whopper on the Flats!
We had a great day out on the flats with Varsha, running a Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip with SRS Adventures in St. Petersburg. June is a fantastic time for flats fishing here, with the warmer waters bringing in plenty of fish. We met up at 1:00 AM in Florida KY, which was an early start, but it paid off. The weather was partly cloudy with a chance of storms, but that didn't slow us down one bit. The water conditions were great, making it perfect for our target species.
We focused on sight fishing, flipping, and pitching techniques, which are my go-to methods for flats fishing. It didn't take long before we spotted some action. Varsha got the hang of it quickly, and soon enough, we were on the fish. The highlight of the day was when she hooked into a nice Red Snapper. That fish put up a real fight, but Varsha handled it like a pro. When we finally got it in the boat, it measured a solid 23 inches - a great catch for the flats!
Throughout the day, we moved around a bit, trying different spots and keeping an eye on the weather. The partly cloudy skies actually worked in our favor, making it easier to spot fish without the harsh glare on the water. We had a few close calls with some storms in the distance, but they never quite reached us. The bite was steady, and even when we weren't catching, just being out on the water and looking for fish was a blast.
