Flats Fishing Fun: Topwater Thrills and Snapper Surprises Await!
I had a great time out on the flats with Kumar today in St. Petersburg. June is a fantastic month for flats fishing here, with the warmer waters bringing in plenty of fish to the shallows. We met up at 1:00 am in Florida KY for our Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip with SRS Adventures. The weather was partly cloudy, with a chance of storms, but that didn't stop us from having an awesome day on the water.
We hit the flats and got right into some sight fishing. The water clarity was great, which made spotting fish a breeze. We tried a mix of techniques - some topwater popping, flipping, and pitching. Kumar picked it up quickly, and we had a blast working different spots. The highlight of the day was when Kumar hooked into a nice Red Snapper. That fish put up a real fight, but Kumar handled it like a pro. When we finally got it in the boat, it measured a solid 23 inches - a great catch for the flats!
Even though we only landed the one Red Snapper, we saw plenty of action throughout the day. The partly cloudy skies actually worked in our favor, giving us some breaks from the sun and keeping the fish active. We had a few close calls with some other big fish, which kept the excitement high. Kumar really got into the rhythm of sight fishing, and it was fun watching him improve his technique as the day went on.
