Flats Fishing Frenzy: Red Snapper Surprise in St. Petersburg
Storm clouds brewing, but the fishing's just getting started in St. Pete!
Storms brewing, but the fishing's still hot in St. Petersburg!
We kicked off a great day of flats fishing with Varsha in St. Petersburg, Florida. June is a prime time for this type of fishing around here, with the warmer waters bringing in plenty of fish to the shallows. We met up at 1:00 AM, which is early, but it's worth it to beat the heat and get on the water when the fish are most active. The weather was partly cloudy, with a chance of storms later, but that didn't dampen our spirits one bit.
Once we got out on the flats, the water looked great for sight fishing. We started off using some tried-and-true techniques like flipping and pitching, keeping our eyes peeled for any signs of fish. It wasn't long before we spotted some movement, and Varsha got her first bite. After a good fight, she reeled in a nice Red Snapper, measuring a solid 23 inches. That's a great catch for the flats, and it definitely got us pumped for what else might be out there.
Throughout the day, we kept at it, moving around the flats and trying different spots. The partly cloudy sky actually worked in our favor, making it easier to spot fish without the glare on the water. We had a few more bites and near-misses, but that Red Snapper remained the highlight of the trip. Even when the fish weren't biting, just being out on the water and showing Varsha some of the best spots in St. Petersburg made for a great day.
