It was an early start, but well worth it as we headed out on the water for a BackCountry fishing trip in Crystal River, Florida. February is a prime time for this style of fishing, as the cooler temperatures and changing seasons mean the fish are active and feeding. I met up with our guest, Thenna, at 5:00 AM at the Crystal River meeting spot, got the gear loaded, and we were on the water before the sun was fully up.
The water conditions were great—partly cloudy skies and a nice calm surface, perfect for spotting fish and working the backwaters. We started off casting live baits, working the mangroves and flats for whatever was willing to bite. It didn't take long before Thenna's rod bent over, and she was into her first fish of the day—a feisty Common eagle ray. That fish put up one heck of a fight, carving up the surface and giving Thenna a real test, but she stuck with it and brought it to the boat.
The backwater action stayed consistent throughout the trip, with a few other smaller fish hitting our baits. Though we didn't manage to land any huge trophies, the steady action and variety of species kept us engaged and entertained. Between catches, we took in the Crystal River scenery, enjoyed the peaceful solitude, and just had an all-around great time out on the water. That's what these BackCountry trips are all about—getting away from it all, connecting with nature, and enjoying the simple pleasures of a day spent fishing.
